Sinopse: A história da série narrava o cotidiano de uma família, os Dukes, que viviam na fictícia cidade de Hazzard, criada pelo produtor Gy Waldron, misturando elementos da sua cidade natal em Falmouth, Kentucky. Os Dukes sempre trabalharam no negócio de uísque clandestino, “moonshine”, até que dois primos, Bo e Luke Duke, foram presos.Depois de muita confusão, eles conseguiram a liberdade mediante a promessa de seu tio Jesse de que os garotos se comportariam bem dali por diante. Entre outros, foram proibidos de portar armas de fogo, razão pela qual aderiram ao arco e flecha, às vezes com dinamite acoplada, utilizadas para amedrontar, nunca para matar.

A liberdade não trouxe tranquilidade aos garotos, uma vez que viviam sendo constantemente perseguidos pelo “chefe” da cidade, Hogg, também dono do banco e credor de todas as hipotecas locais, inclusive a da fazenda do tio Jesse Duke. Outro que perseguia os Dukes era o atrapalhado xerife Rosco, na verdade um pau-mandado de Hogg. O xerife ainda tinha um assistente tão banana quanto ele chamado  Cletus. Todos cansavam de comer poeira nas eletrizantes perseguições aos primos Dukes.

Mas os aventureiros primos não estavam sozinhos, todo os fazendeiros locais ficavam do seu lado, com destaque para David e Enos, amigos do Tio Jesse. Outra personagem que aparecia com frequência era a belíssima prima Daisy Duke, que trabalhava como garçonete numa lanchonete local e que algumas vezes largava o avental para participar das perseguições de carros.
