Sinopse: A série gira em torno de Fran Fine (Fran Drescher), que tem voz anasalada. Ao perder seu trabalho na loja de noivas do ex-namorado, Fran tem de vender cosméticos de porta em porta. Assim, Fran dirige-se à casa do inglês Maxwell Sheffield, produtor da Broadway e pai de 3 crianças. Maxwell confunde a Srtª. Fine com a babá que tinha contratado, e deixa-a entrar. Fran aproveita a oportunidade e aprende rapidamente a ser a babá das crianças.

O mordomo Niles (Daniel Davis) mantém a casa impecável e a intromete-se constantemente nas conversas da família. Niles reconhece rapidamente a boa vontade de Fran e logo tornam-se amigos. C.C. Babcock (Lauren Lane), sócia de Maxwell e apaixonada por ele, vê na ama uma concorrência de peso e tenta a todo o custo que Maxwell não se apaixone por ela.

Sempre presentes na mansão Sheffield estão a amiga de Fran, Val, sua mãe, Sylvia, e sua avó Yetta. O seriado conta com aparições mais que especiais de celebridades como: Jay Leno, Ray Charles, Elton John, Whoopi Goldberg, Erik Estrada, entre outros famosos.
